Returning to the U.K. after an enriching stint in China filled me with excitement and uncertainty.

Securing a position in the procurement department of a local water company seemed like settling into a new beginning. My Chinese partner joined me, bridging the gap between my past adventures and present life.

Yet, beneath this transition, a storm was brewing inside me. This struggle is not unique to me; many of us find ourselves at a crossroads where what we want clashes with reality of our situation.

Unbeknownst to me, I carried an idealised self-image that was rigid and unyielding. My expectations of myself and those around me, especially my partner, were high. When reality clashed with these ideals, I erupted in anger.

I became a stranger to compromise and understanding, traits essential for nurturing relationships. Interestingly, my experience is typical. A study found that in the U.S., 7.8% of the population struggles with inappropriate, intense, or poorly controlled anger, a challenge especially prevalent among men and younger adults.
